Prada S.p.A. is an Italian luxury fashion house, specializing in ready-to-wear leather and fashion accessories, luggage, perfumes, shoes, watches and so on. It was established by Mario Prada.
Mario Prada and his brother Martino started the company in 1913 as a leathergoods shop called Fratelli Prada, Prada Brothers in English, set in Milan, Italy. At first, the shop sold leather goods and imported English purses and steamer trunks.
Mario Prada did not believe that women could be part of a business and so he stopped female members of his family from entering. Absurdly, Mario’s son was not curious about the profession and so his daughter, Luisa Prada, became the successor of Prada and worked there for approximately twenty years. In 1970, her daughter, Miuccia Prada, joined the firm and in 1978 replaced her mother in the management of it.
She began making waterproof bags out of Pocone. In 1977 she met Patrizio Bertelli, an Italian who at the age of 17 began making his own leathergoods business. A little bit later he joined the company. He gave great contributions to the business giving advices to Miuccia who thanks to him changed the company for the good.
With Bertelli next to her Miuccia would soon start to create her own design and encorporate her ideas in the Prada firm.
Prada’s bags are so acclaimed because are not just bags to carry things around but are real works of art. They are elusive.
“Basically I’m trying to make men more sensitive and women stronger.” Miuccia Prada.
